Edmund Butler, 4th Viscount Mountgarret (born 1595, died 1679) was an important person in Ireland. He was the son of Richard Butler, 3rd Viscount Mountgarret. When his father passed away in 1651, Edmund became the new Viscount Mountgarret.

Even though many families lost their land during that time, Edmund was able to keep his. His family had been involved in a big rebellion by Irish Catholics against the English king. This group was called the Catholic Confederacy.

However, Edmund was lucky. King Charles II gave him a special pardon. This meant Edmund was forgiven for any actions against the king. Because of this pardon, he got all his family's lands back in the areas of north and east Kilkenny. He lived to be 84 years old.

Edmund's Marriages

Edmund Butler married three times during his life.

His first wife was Lady Dorothy Touchet. They got married around 1630. Sadly, she is thought to have died in February 1635.

After her death, he married again quite quickly. In 1635, he married Anne Trensham. Then, in 1637, he married Elizabeth Simeon. She lived until 1674.
