Edmund Fortescue was the oldest son of John Fortescue (who lived from 1525 to 1595). His mother was Honora Speccot. The Fortescue family was well-known in Devon. When his father passed away in 1595, Edmund took over the family home and lands at Fallapit. You can still see a special metal plaque, called a monumental brass, in East Allington Church that remembers his father.
His Work in Politics
Edmund Fortescue was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a place called Old Sarum in 1593. A Member of Parliament is like a representative who helps make laws for the country. It's similar to someone elected to Congress or Parliament today. Later, from 1622 to 1623, he also served as the Sheriff of Devon. A Sheriff was a very important official who helped keep law and order in the county.
