Early Life and Career

On June 23, 1629, Sir Edmund was chosen as an Alderman for the City of London. An alderman was an important official who helped govern a specific part of the city, in his case, a section called Cordwainer ward. He also served as the Sheriff of London in 1629 and 1630. The Sheriff was a high-ranking official responsible for keeping law and order.

Becoming a City Leader

These roles as alderman and sheriff showed that Sir Edmund was becoming a very influential person in London's government and business world. He was trusted with important responsibilities.

In 1629, Sir Edmund bought a large estate known as Swakeleys House. There was an old house on the land, but he decided to build a new one. Between 1629 and 1638, he completely rebuilt the house. Lord Mayor of London

In 1640, Sir Edmund Wright became the Lord Mayor of London. This happened after the previous mayor left office because of a decision by Parliament. Being Lord Mayor was a huge honor and meant he was the chief leader of London's government.

A Knight and Hospital Leader

On June 20, 1641, Sir Edmund was knighted. This meant he was given the title "Sir" by the King, recognizing his importance and service. From 1642 to 1643, he also served as the head of St. Thomas' Hospital, a very famous hospital in London.

Family Life

Sir Edmund Wright had two sons, but sadly, they both passed away when they were young. He also had six daughters. Three of his daughters married important men of their time: Sir James Harrington, Sir Richard Atkyns, and Sir Robert Cordell.
