Edmundo Desnoes facts for kids
Edmundo Desnoes (born October 2, 1930 – died December 6, 2023) was a Cuban writer. He is best known for his novel Memorias del subdesarrollo (which means Memories of Underdevelopment). This book tells a complex story about a man from a well-off family who stayed in Cuba during big changes, even though his family left. He found it hard to adjust to the new way of life.
Desnoes first called the book Inconsolable Memories in its first English version. In 1968, a very important Cuban film was made based on the book, also called Memorias del Subdesarrollo. This film was directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea.
Life and Work
During the 1960s and 1970s, while living in Cuba, Edmundo Desnoes worked as a writer for a newspaper called "La Revolucion." He also edited books about art and literature for different publishing houses. He was part of the editorial team for Casa de Las Americas and taught cultural history at a design school.
In 1979, Desnoes moved to New York City, where he lived for many years. In 2007, he published a sequel to his famous novel, called Memorias del Desarrollo (Memories of Overdevelopment). This book was also made into an award-winning film in 2010 by Miguel Coyula.
Desnoes wrote many different types of works, including essays, short stories, poetry, and several novels. He also wrote reviews about art. He passed away in New York on December 6, 2023, at the age of 93.
