Early Life and Knighthood
Edward Burgh was born in 1461 in Lincolnshire, England. His parents were Sir Thomas Burgh, 1st Baron Burgh and Margaret de Ros.
In 1487, Edward was made a knight at the Battle of Stoke Field. Being knighted meant he was a brave warrior and a loyal servant to the king.
Becoming a Baron
When his father passed away in 1495, Edward became the 2nd Lord Burgh of Gainsborough. This meant he inherited his father's noble title. However, he was never officially called to join the English Parliament.
Around 1510, Edward Burgh developed a serious health condition that affected his mind. Because of this illness, he was unable to take part in Parliament. Some of his relatives, including Lord Ros of Hamlake and Sir George Tailboys, also experienced similar health issues.
Family and Marriages
Edward Burgh married Anne Cobham when he was 13 years old. Anne was 9 years old at the time. She was an heiress, meaning she would inherit a lot of wealth and property. Anne brought him ownership of Sterborough Castle. In 1471, Anne also inherited the title of 6th Baroness Cobham.
Edward and Anne had two known children:
- Thomas
- Sir Henry Burgh
For a long time, people thought that Edward Burgh married Catherine Parr. Catherine Parr later became the sixth wife of King Henry VIII. However, this was incorrect. Edward Burgh died in 1528, a year before Catherine Parr got married.
Recent research has shown that Catherine Parr actually married Edward's grandson, who was also named Edward Burgh. This younger Edward was the eldest son of Edward's eldest son, Sir Thomas Burgh.
Death and What Happened Next
Edward Burgh, the 2nd Baron, passed away in 1528. After his death, his noble title went to his eldest son, Sir Thomas Burgh. Sir Thomas was officially called to Parliament as the 1st Lord Burgh of Gainsborough in 1529.
Edward's other son, Henry, married Katherine Neville in 1529. Henry and Katherine had one daughter named Anne Burgh.
