Edward Joseph Coyne (1896-1958) was an important Irish priest, economist, and sociologist. He was also known as Fr. Ned Coyne. He helped start the Catholic Workers' College in Dublin, which later became the National College of Ireland. He was the head of this college from 1951 to 1954.

Edward Coyne was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 20, 1896. He went to school at Clongowes Wood College. Later, he studied at University College Dublin. There, he focused on History and Economics and did very well in both subjects.

A Teacher and Advisor

Fr. Coyne became a Jesuit priest. Jesuits are a group of Catholic priests who often focus on education and helping others. He taught at the Jesuit College in Milltown, Dublin.

He was also a trusted advisor to important people. For example, he helped Éamon de Valera, who was a major leader in Ireland, when the 1937 Irish Constitution was being written. This constitution is the main set of rules for how Ireland is governed.

Fr. Coyne also worked on different government groups and organizations. He was the leader of the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society, which helped farmers in Ireland.

Later Life

Fr. Coyne passed away on May 22, 1958. He is remembered for his work in education, economics, and for helping to shape modern Ireland.
