Edward Edgeworth was an English clergyman who became a powerful bishop in Ireland during the 16th century. He was a highly educated man, holding the title of Doctor of Divinity, which means he was a top religious scholar.
Early Life and Career
Edward Edgeworth was probably born in Edgware, a place in north London, England. He served as a church leader, called a Vicar, in East Kirkby before moving to Ireland. This move likely happened in the early 1560s.
Becoming a Bishop in Ireland
Once in Ireland, Edward Edgeworth took on several important roles. In 1586, he became a special priest, known as a Prebendary, at St Michan's Church. This church was part of the famous St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. Later that same year, he also became a Prebendary at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin.
In 1590, he became the Vicar of Carrickfergus. Then, in 1593, he was appointed the Bishop of Down and Connor. This was a very high position in the church. Edward Edgeworth served as bishop for two years before he passed away in 1595.
His Family's Legacy
Edward Edgeworth became quite wealthy during his lifetime. He left his money and property to his brother, Francis Edgeworth. Francis was also an important person. Around 1606, he became a government official in Ireland, handling important documents as the joint Clerk of the Crown and Hanaper. He held this job until about 1620.
Francis Edgeworth started a very talented family line in Ireland. Two of the most famous members of this family were Richard Lovell Edgeworth and his daughter, Maria Edgeworth. Maria was a well-known novelist. The family was so important that a town in County Longford, Ireland, was named after them: Edgeworthstown.
