Edward Foley (born 1676 – died 4 April 1747) was an English politician. He was a member of the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons between 1701 and 1741. He belonged to the Tory Party.

Early Life

Edward Foley was born in 1676 and was baptized on September 23 of that year. He was the second son of Thomas Foley from Whitley Court in Worcestershire. His mother was Elizabeth Ashe. Edward's grandfather was also a Member of Parliament.

Political Career

Edward Foley became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Droitwich in 1701. He was elected without anyone running against him. In 1702, he voted on an important issue concerning some Whig lords.

He was re-elected in 1702, 1705, and 1708. In 1710, he voted against the impeachment of Dr. Sacheverell. After being re-elected in 1710, he was seen as a "worthy patriot." This meant he helped show problems with the old government. He also supported the new government's plans for peace.

Edward Foley was also part of a group called the October Club. In 1711, he became a Commissioner for the South Sea Company. This company was involved in trade. Later in 1711, he was given a job as a Receiver General. This job paid £350 a year. Because of this new job, he left his seat in Parliament. His younger brother, Richard, took his place as MP. However, Edward lost this job in 1714 when King George I came to the throne.

Edward Foley then decided to study law. He joined Lincoln's Inn in 1717. Even though he studied law, he never became a lawyer. He kept his offices at Lincoln's Inn.

In 1731, his brother Richard passed away. Edward inherited his brother's property. He also took his brother's place as MP for Droitwich. This happened after a special election on April 15, 1732. He was elected again in 1734. Edward consistently voted with the Opposition. He decided not to run for Parliament again in 1741.

Later Life and Legacy

Edward Foley passed away on April 4, 1747. He was 70 years old and had never married. His property went to his nephew, the 2nd Lord Foley.
