Life and Political Career

Edward Garth-Turnour was born Edward Garth. His mother's family had a famous ancestor, Sir Edward Turnor. Sir Edward was the Speaker of the House of Commons from 1661 to 1671. The Speaker is like the referee or leader of the main part of the British Parliament.

In 1744, Edward inherited the Turnour family's large estates, including Shillinglee in West Sussex. Because of this, he changed his last name to Turnour.

Becoming a Peer and MP

In March 1761, Edward was given a special title in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became Baron Winterton. A peer is a person who holds a noble title, like a Baron or an Earl.

Later that year, in December 1761, he was chosen to be a member of the House of Commons for a place called Bramber. The House of Commons is where elected politicians make laws for the country. He kept this job until 1769.

Edward received even more honors in 1766. He was made Viscount Turnour and then Earl Winterton. These are higher noble titles, also in the Peerage of Ireland.

Royal Society Membership

In 1767, Edward Garth-Turnour was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists and thinkers. Being a Fellow means you are recognized for your important contributions to knowledge.

Lord Winterton passed away in August 1788. His son, also named Edward, took over his title as the next Earl.

Family Life

Edward Garth-Turnour married Anne Archer in 1756. They had many children together. After Anne passed away in 1775, he married Elizabeth Armstrong in 1778, and they had two more children. His eldest son, Edward Turnour, 2nd Earl Winterton, inherited his title.
