Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Lisle was an important English nobleman. He was given the special title of Viscount Lisle in 1483. This title was a recognition of his wife's noble family background. He passed away in 1492.

Early Life and Family Roots

Edward Grey came from a well-known noble family. His father was also named Sir Edward Grey. His mother was Elizabeth Ferrers, a noblewoman who held the title of Baroness Ferrers of Groby.

Edward's father was able to join the Parliament because of his mother's important title. Edward also had an older brother, Sir John Grey of Groby. John was a knight who supported the House of Lancaster during a time of conflict.

Sir John Grey was the first husband of Elizabeth Woodville. She later became Queen of England when she married King Edward IV. This means Edward Grey was connected to the royal family through his brother.

Marriage and Children

Sir Edward Grey married Elizabeth Talbot. She was the 3rd Baroness Lisle. Elizabeth was the daughter and heir of John Talbot, who was the 1st Viscount Lisle.

Her family's noble title, Baron Lisle, came from her ancestor, Gerard de Lisle, who lived in the 1300s. Through his marriage to Elizabeth, Edward Grey had several children:

  • John Grey, 2nd Viscount Lisle (1481–1504): He was their oldest son and inherited his father's titles. John married Muriel Howard. They had a daughter named Elizabeth Grey, who later became the 3rd Viscountess Lisle.
  • Anne Grey
  • Elizabeth Grey, 6th Baroness Lisle (died 1529): She married two times.
    • Her first husband was Edmund Dudley. He was a treasurer for King Henry VII.
    • Her second husband was Arthur Plantagenet. He was an illegitimate son of King Edward IV. Arthur was also given the title of Viscount Lisle, honoring his wife's family history.
  • Muryell Grey

There might have been another daughter named Margaret. Some records suggest Margaret and Muriel might be the same person.
