Edward Guildford facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Edward Guildford was an important English nobleman who lived from about 1474 to 1534. He worked closely with the King and held several big jobs. He was a courtier, which means he served at the royal court. He also became the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, a very important role in charge of special coastal towns in England. In 1519, he was made the Marshal of Calais, a military leader in the French city of Calais, which was controlled by England at the time.

When his father passed away in 1506, Edward took over his father's job as Master of the Armoury for life. This meant he was in charge of all the weapons and armor for the King. He was honored with the title of Knight on September 25, 1513.

Who Was Sir Edward Guildford?

Edward Guildford was born in a place called Offington, which is part of Broadwater (now near Worthing). His parents were Sir Richard Guildford and Anne Pympe.

His Family Life

Sir Edward Guildford was married twice. His first wife was Eleanor West. They got married before 1496. With Eleanor, he had a son named Richard and a daughter named Jane. Jane grew up to marry John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland, and they had many children together.

Edward's second wife was Joan Pitlesden. They did not have any children.

Sadly, Edward's son Richard died before him. This caused some discussion about who would inherit his property, especially Haldon Manor. His daughter Jane ended up inheriting it, even though some people thought his nephew, John Guildford, should have received it instead.
