Sir Edward Hungerford was an important English landowner and politician who lived a long time ago, from before 1532 until 1607. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, in 1601.

Edward Hungerford's Early Life

Edward Hungerford was born around 1532. His father was Walter Hungerford, 1st Baron Hungerford of Heytesbury. His mother was Alice Sandys. Her father was William Sandys, 1st Baron Sandys.

Becoming a Public Servant

Edward Hungerford started his career as a gentleman pensioner by May 1558. This meant he was a special guard for the monarch. He also became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Wiltshire around 1583. A J.P. helped keep law and order in the local area.

Important Roles and Land Ownership

From 1594 to 1595, Edward was the High Sheriff of Wiltshire. This was a very important role. He was in charge of law enforcement in the county. Around 1596, he inherited many lands from his half-brother, Sir Walter Hungerford (Knight of Farley). This made him a very wealthy landowner.

In 1598, he helped collect money for the government. This was called being a collector for the loan. He also provided a light horse for Ireland in 1600 and 1601. This meant he supplied a horse and rider for military service.

Serving in Parliament

After a rebellion led by the Earl of Essex, Edward Hungerford was given a special job. He had to look after his relative, William, Lord Sandys. In 1601, he was made a knight, so he became Sir Edward Hungerford.

That same year, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Wiltshire. This meant he represented his area in the House of Commons.

Later Life and Death

In 1602, Sir Edward bought a large estate called Corsham. In 1604, he received even more lands. These lands were in Berkshire, Cornwall, Somerset, and Wiltshire. They had once belonged to his father. His father's lands had been taken away because of serious legal problems.

Sir Edward Hungerford wrote his will on December 1, 1607. He passed away just four days later.

Sir Edward's Family Life

Sir Edward Hungerford was married twice. His first wife was Jane. She was the daughter of Anthony Hungerford of Down Ampney. She had also been married before to William Forster.

His second wife was Cecily Tufton. She was the daughter of Sir John Tufton. Sir Edward and Cecily did not have any children. After Sir Edward died, Cecily married Francis Manners, 6th Earl of Rutland.
