Edward J McHugh: A Voice for Ireland
Edward J McHugh was born in 1846. He grew up to be a successful businessman. He owned a large shop in Belfast that sold clothes and fabrics, often called a drapery. He was the main owner and director of this big business.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
McHugh decided to get involved in politics to help his country. He was part of a group called the Irish National Federation. This group wanted to see changes for Ireland.
In 1892, McHugh ran for election in South Armagh. He was running against the person who was already the MP, Alexander Blane. Blane belonged to a different political group at the time. McHugh won the election easily. He also beat another candidate from the Irish Unionist Alliance.
His Time in Politics
After his first win, Edward McHugh was re-elected in 1895. He won by a large number of votes against another candidate. He continued to hold his seat as the MP for South Armagh until he died in August 1900.
When he passed away, there wasn't another special election right away to fill his seat. This was because the main Parliament was about to end its term. A new general election was held in October 1900.
