The Edward Mooney House is a very old and important building in New York City. It stands at 18 Bowery, right on the corner of Pell Street, in an area now known as Chinatown. This historic house was built a long time ago, between 1785 and 1789.
It was built by a wealthy butcher named Edward Mooney. The land it sits on was once part of a large farm. This farm belonged to a British supporter named James Delancey. After the American Revolution, the new American government took the land. They sold it at an auction, and Edward Mooney bought it. He lived in the house until he passed away in 1800.

How Was the House Built?
The house was built using bricks. It was designed in a style called "Early Federal." This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution. It often mixed ideas from older Georgian buildings with new American touches.
The house has three main floors. It also has an attic at the very top and a full basement underneath. When it was built, it was very close to places like slaughterhouses and tanneries. These were near a freshwater pond called Collect Pond.
How Did the House Change Over Time?
In 1807, the house became much bigger. An addition was built onto the back, doubling its size. For many years, until the 1820s, the house was used as a private home. Families lived there, just like people live in houses today.
Later on, the building changed its purpose. It became a hotel, where travelers could stay. At another time, it was a popular place called Barney Flynn's saloon. A saloon was a type of old-fashioned pub or bar.
Why is it an Important Landmark?
The Edward Mooney House is recognized as an important historical site. In 1966, it was officially named a New York City landmark. This means it is a protected building because of its history and unique design.
Ten years later, in 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places across the entire United States. Being on this list helps to protect the house for future generations. The house was sold in January 2013 for $5.4 million dollars.
