Edward William Wynne Pendarves was born on April 6, 1775. His birth name was Edward William Stackhouse. His parents were John Stackhouse, a botanist, and Susanna Acton. He later changed his name to Pendarves.
A Member of Parliament
Edward Pendarves became a Member of Parliament, often called an MP. This means he was elected to represent people in the British Parliament, which is like the country's main law-making group. He represented the area of West Cornwall. He served as an MP from December 19, 1832, until he passed away in 1853.
Important Projects and Roles
Edward Pendarves was involved in several significant projects during his life.
South Western Railway
In 1836, he was part of the Committee of Management for the South Western Railway. This committee helped guide the development of new railway lines, which were very important for travel and trade in England at that time.
University of London
He was also one of the owners, or "proprietors," of the University of London. In 1831, he and other proprietors called for a special meeting. They wanted a Select Committee to look into why the university project wasn't moving forward faster. This shows he cared about education and making sure important projects were completed.
Warden of the Stannaries
In 1852, Edward Pendarves was given the role of Deputy-Warden of the Stannaries. The Stannaries were special courts and laws related to tin mining in Cornwall and Devon. This role was important for managing the mining industry in his home county of Cornwall.
His Legacy
Edward Pendarves passed away on June 26, 1853. There is a special memorial for him inside St Martin and St Meriadoc’s Church, Camborne. This memorial was designed by a famous sculptor named Edward Hodges Baily.
