The Edwards's fig parrot (also called the scarlet-cheeked fig parrot) is a colorful bird from the parrot family. Its scientific name is Psittaculirostris edwardsii. These parrots live in the warm, wet forests of northeastern New Guinea. Adult males are mostly green, with bright red on their chest and cheeks. They also have yellow feathers near their ears and a yellowish top of their head.

Naming the Parrot
A French scientist named Émile Oustalet first described the Edwards's fig parrot in 1885. He named it after another French scientist, Alphonse Milne-Edwards. This parrot is one of three types of birds in a group called Psittaculirostris.
What Does the Edwards's Fig Parrot Look Like?
Size and Colors
This parrot is a medium-sized bird. It has a strong body and a short tail. It grows to be about 18 centimeters (7 inches) long.
Adult male parrots have bright green wings, back, and tail. The feathers on their cheeks and near their ears are long and thin. This makes their face look a bit ruffled. Their cheek feathers are red, and the ear feathers are golden-yellow. The throat and chest are red, with a dark blue-black band across the upper chest. Their beak is dark grey-black, and their eyes are red. Their feet are dark grey.
Female and Young Parrots
Female parrots look similar to males. However, they have a wider blue-black band on their chest. This band is usually on a green-yellow part of their chest. Young parrots look a lot like the adult females.
Parrot Sounds
Edwards's fig parrots make different sounds. They can make a high-pitched screett or zseet sound. They also make a short, sharp ks sound. Some people describe this sound as "coins dropping on concrete."
Where Do Edwards's Fig Parrots Live?
Their Home in New Guinea
Edwards's fig parrots are found only in northeastern New Guinea. You can find them from Yos Sudarso Bay and Vanimo in the west, all the way east to the Huon Gulf. They are common in these areas. They live in lowland forests, which are forests at low elevations. They can also be found in areas where trees have been cleared.
How Do Edwards's Fig Parrots Behave?
Social Life and Diet
These parrots are usually seen alone or in pairs. However, sometimes large groups of up to 35 parrots gather. They meet up at fruit trees to eat. Their green feathers help them hide well among the leaves.
Edwards's fig parrots have been seen eating with other birds. These include double-eyed fig parrots, fruit pigeons, honeyeaters, and starlings. They mostly eat fruit, especially figs.
Nesting Habits
Edwards's fig parrots build their nests in small holes. These holes are usually high up in large trees. Scientists do not know much about their nesting behavior yet.
