Egil Hjorth-Jenssen (born April 18, 1893 – died November 8, 1969) was a very talented Norwegian actor, theatre director, and writer. He was known for his work on stage and in films. He also wrote books for children and translated famous stories.

Early Life and Family

Egil Hjorth-Jenssen was born in a town called Fredrikshald, which is now known as Halden, Norway. His birthday was April 18, 1893. His father was Gunnar Olaves Jenssen, who worked as an editor. His mother was Anna Marie Cecilie Hjorth. Egil married Rachel Råby in 1921. He passed away in November 1969 in Bærum, Norway.

A Life in Theatre

Egil Hjorth-Jenssen loved performing! He started his acting career on stage in 1914 at Stavanger Teater. For many years, he worked at different theatres across Norway. He performed at Trondhjems Teater and Chat Noir. Later, he acted at several theatres in Oslo, including the famous Nationaltheatret.

He didn't just act; he also directed plays! From 1939 to 1946, he was the theatre director for Den Nationale Scene in Bergen. He also led the Norwegian Actors' Equity Association from 1932 to 1939. This group helps actors in Norway. From 1948 to 1950, he was the artistic director of Det Gamle Teater.

Beyond the Stage

Egil Hjorth-Jenssen also appeared in movies. Some of the films he acted in include Den glade enke i Trangvik (1927), Bussen (1961), and Brent jord (1969).

He was a writer too! He wrote two children's books: Fire fra middelskolen (1932) and Bilbandittene og de fire fra middelskolen (1933). He also wrote two plays. Egil was a translator, bringing popular books to Norwegian readers. He translated famous stories like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huck Finn.

In 1948, he wrote a book about the first fifty years of the Norwegian Actors' Equity Association. Because of all his important work, he became an honorary member of the association in 1964.
