Egypt is a small, unincorporated community located in Jackson County, Kentucky, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the county. The post office in Egypt has been closed for some time.
Why is it called Egypt?
The name "Egypt" for this community has an interesting story! In 1876, a post office was opened here. The name was given by a family called Amyx who had recently moved to the area.
Feeling Far From Home
The Amyx family felt very homesick in their new rural home. They felt like they were in a very isolated or distant place. Because of this feeling, they named the community "Egypt." It was as if they had been sent far away, just like ancient stories of people being exiled to Egypt.
