What is Egypt, Ohio?
Egypt is known as an unincorporated community. This means it is a collection of homes and businesses that are part of a larger township or county. It does not have its own separate local government like a city or a village would. People living in Egypt rely on the government of Jackson Township and Auglaize County for services.
How Egypt Got Its Name
In the early days, traveling around this area was very difficult. The land was often muddy and wet because it was close to a large swampy region called the Great Black Swamp. One of the first people to settle here gave the community the name "Egypt." This name might have been chosen because of the challenges of living in the area at that time.
The First Church in Egypt
Because the land was so difficult to travel, it was hard for people in Egypt to go to church in the nearby village of Minster. They had to make a long and tough journey through the muddy land. To make it easier for everyone, the people of Egypt asked for their own church to be built closer to home.
So, in 1852, a church called St. Joseph's Catholic Church was started in Egypt. This church became a very important part of the community.
Important Places in Egypt
Egypt has always been a small community. When the people wanted to build their new church in 1852, they were able to gather about eight hundred dollars. This shows that it was a modest place with not many people or businesses.
Today, the most famous building in Egypt is St. Joseph's Catholic Church. This historic church was recognized for its importance in 1979. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important for their history or architecture.
Besides the church, Egypt also has a cemetery where people from the community are buried. There was once a school in Egypt, but it is no longer there.
