The Story of Egyptian Lover
Early Days as a DJ
The Egyptian Lover was born in Los Angeles, California. He started his music journey as a DJ with a group called Uncle Jamm's Army. He would DJ at huge dance parties, sometimes for as many as 10,000 people at places like the L.A. Sports Arena.
He began recording his own music around Los Angeles in 1982. He was part of the Radio Crew and also Uncle Jamm's Army. Other famous artists like Dr. Dre, The Unknown DJ, Ice-T, and Kid Frost were also part of these groups. They all helped create the early sound of West Coast Hip-Hop in the 1980s.
Hit Songs and Albums
Many of Egyptian Lover's most popular songs were released as 12-inch singles. One of his most famous songs was "Egypt, Egypt." It became a classic song for b-boys, which were young people who loved hip-hop culture and breakdancing.
He also released some of the very first rap albums. His 1984 album, On the Nile, was quite successful. It even reached the Billboard Top 200 music chart. This album was known as one of the first hip-hop records to come from the West Coast. He also worked with many other hip-hop and dance music artists. After taking a break in the early 1990s, Egyptian Lover returned in 1994 with Back from the Tomb. This was his first full album in over ten years.
His Own Record Company
The Egyptian Lover also started his own record company called Egyptian Empire Records. This company helped other artists release their music. Some of the artists on his label included Rodney O & Joe Cooley, 2 O'Clock, and Te & Joezee.
Modern Music and Equipment
His 2015 album, 1984, continued his unique style. He used only analog music equipment, like the Roland TR-808 drum machine. This was the same type of gear he used for his recordings in the 1980s. The album's name, "1984," was a nod to his earlier albums. It was recorded in the same studio where On The Nile was made in 1984.
