Ekaterine worked hard to improve the lives and rights of women in Georgia. She believed in social reform and helped women gain more freedom and opportunities.

About Ekaterine Gabashvili

Ekaterine Tarkhnishvili was born on June 16, 1851. Her family was aristocratic, meaning they were from a noble background. She was born in Gori, a city that was part of the Russian Empire at the time. Her parents were Revaz Tarkhnishvili and Sopio Bagraton-Davitashvili.

Her Early Life and Education

Ekaterine went to the best school in Gori for her primary education. It was a private boarding school run by Madam Favre. When she was 17, Ekaterine showed her caring nature. She opened her own private school. This school was special because it was for peasant children. She was very concerned about how peasant families lived.

Family Life and Inspiration

At 19, Ekaterine married Aleksandre Gabashvili. Together, they raised 11 children. Her writing and ideas were greatly influenced by two books. These books were about women gaining more rights and freedom. They were The Enfranchisement of Women by Harriet Taylor Mill and Für und wider die Frauen by Fanny Lewald. Both books had been translated into Georgian.

Working for Women's Rights

Inspired by these ideas, Ekaterine began to organize women in Georgia. She started women's groups in cities like Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Gori, and Khoni. These groups focused on publishing and translating books. The books were about women's issues and helped spread new ideas. In 1897, she opened a professional school for women. This led to many similar girls' schools opening across the country.

Helping Children and Learning

Ekaterine Gabashvili was also an active member of the Society for the Advancement of Learning Among Georgians. This group worked to improve education for everyone. In 1890, she co-founded a special journal called Jejili. She started it with Anastasia Tumanishvili-Tsereteli. Jejili published literature especially for children. It helped encourage more interest in children's books in Georgia.
