El Callao is a lively town in the state of Bolívar, Venezuela. It is the main town of the El Callao Municipality. This town started in the mid-1800s. El Callao became very important because of its rich gold mines. One of these mines, which began operating in 1871, was once among the wealthiest gold mines in the world!

Because of all the gold mining, many people moved to El Callao. The official number of people living there is about 25,000. However, some believe the real number could be five times higher due to all the miners and their families.
