El Castell de Guadalest facts for kids
Guadalest is a small, beautiful town in Spain. It's located in the mountains of the Alicante province, in a region called Marina Baixa. Even though it's a small place, with only about 189 people living there, it attracts many visitors because of its rich history and interesting museums.
History of Guadalest
The most famous part of Guadalest is its old castle. It was built way back in the 11th century, a long time ago, when Muslims ruled this part of Spain. The castle was super important because it helped control the valley and protect the area from fights between different kingdoms.
In the 13th century, Christian kings took control of the region. Guadalest and its castle became part of the Kingdom of Valencia. Many Muslim people were allowed to stay and work the land for a long time, until they were later asked to leave. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by different families.
The castle faced some tough times. On June 22, 1644, a big earthquake damaged it. Then, in 1708, during a war, a part of the castle was blown up. Today, only a small, ruined part of the castle still stands, looking over the valley.
