El Cerrito is a neighborhood in San Diego, California. Its name means "The Little Hill" in Spanish. El Cerrito is mostly a place where people live, with many suburban homes. You can also find some shops and businesses along its main streets.
History of El Cerrito
The name "El Cerrito" comes from a small hill in the area. This "little hill" was the biggest one on the old Cajon Road. People first wrote about it in the late 1800s.
A long time ago, El Cerrito was mostly farms. Farmers grew many orange and lemon trees here. In the 1920s, the neighborhood started to grow more. A main road called El Cajon Boulevard was built. This road runs right through the middle of El Cerrito.
Where is El Cerrito?
As its name suggests, El Cerrito is built around a small hill. A road called Overlook Drive goes around this hill.
The neighborhood has clear borders:
- To the west, it's bordered by 54th Street.
- To the north, you'll find the Baja Canyon.
- College Avenue is its border to the east.
- To the south, it's bordered by University Avenue and Chollas Parkway.
