El Palmar is a lively village and the biggest district in Murcia, Spain. It's part of the larger Murcia municipality. In 2020, about 24,266 people lived here.
Have you ever wondered how El Palmar got its name? There are two main ideas! One idea is that it comes from the many palm trees and European fan palms that grow in the area. The other idea is that the name comes from "El Palomar." This old name appeared in documents from the 1500s.

Where is El Palmar?
El Palmar is located at the foot of the Puerto de la Cadena mountains. It's only about 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from the city of Murcia.
A Look at El Palmar's History
Ancient Times
People have lived in this area for a very long time. We know this because archaeologists found remains from a Roman farm. This farm dates back to the 2nd century BC.
Medieval Castle
During the Middle Ages, a castle called La Asomada was built here. This happened in the 12th century, around the 1100s.
Becoming a Town
In the 1600s, more and more people moved to El Palmar. Because of this growth, it officially became a "villa." A villa was a special type of town with certain rights.
Changes in Government
El Palmar has had some interesting changes in how it was governed. When the Spanish Constitution of 1812 was created, El Palmar became its own independent municipality. This meant it could make some of its own decisions.
However, when King Ferdinand VII returned to power, he took away this special status. El Palmar became part of Murcia again. Later, during a period called the Trienio Liberal (1820–1823), El Palmar once again became its own municipality. But after this short time, it went back to being part of Murcia.
