The Musical Journey of El Prieto
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Arvei Angulo Rivas was born in Valencia, Venezuela, on April 13, 1982. He grew up in Petare, a challenging neighborhood. His experiences there later inspired many of his songs.
El Prieto started his music career as a rapper after returning to Venezuela from Colombia. He met another rapper named Rekeson at a nightclub. They performed a freestyle together and decided to form a rap duo. This is how the group Guerrilla Seca (GCK) began.
Forming Guerrilla Seca
Around 1995, rap music was still very new and not widely known. Rekeson and El Prieto, who was then known as Colombia, often performed their music on the streets. Their performances caught the attention of Juan Carlos Echeandia. He signed them to Subterráneo Records. There, they created their first record with other underground rap groups. This album was called Venezuela Subterránea.
Three years later, Guerrilla Seca released their first solo album. It was called La Realidad Más Real (The Most Real Reality). This album became very popular across Venezuela. It helped rap music become more widely known in the country.
Solo Work and Challenges
In 2006, after the success of The Most Real Reality, El Prieto and Rekeson faced some personal disagreements. They decided to release two separate albums. However, they still used the name GCK for both albums to keep the group's identity. El Prieto released Yo contra el mundo (Me Against the World), and Rekeson released Jugando Vivo (Playing Live). While Rekeson's album was well-received, El Prieto's album received some criticism from fans.
Despite their differences, El Prieto and Rekeson started working together again two years later. El Prieto also had some public disagreements with his former manager, Juan Carlos Echeandia, from Subterráneo Records. These were widely discussed in the music scene.
Reunions and New Paths
In 2008, El Prieto and Rekeson reunited as a duo to release a new album. This album was called Al Aire Pero Preso (Free But Jailed). They released it independently, without Subterráneo Records, due to their past disagreements. Fans really liked this album.
However, their reunion did not last long. A year later, El Prieto and Rekeson had more disagreements. They decided to separate permanently, ending the Guerrilla Seca project. This left many fans disappointed. Both artists continued to work on their music careers separately.
El Prieto's music often shares messages about life in neighborhoods and the challenges people face. He aims to show the reality of these areas through his songs.
