Discovering El Soberbio
How El Soberbio Got Its Name
The name El Soberbio means 'The Proud' in Spanish. It comes from a famous phrase. One of the first people to explore the area said, "What a magnificent place!" This was said when they reached the mouth of the Guarambocá creek. That moment gave the place its proud name.
Understanding the Population
El Soberbio has a population of about 20,000 people. This information comes from the 2001 INDEC census. Most of the people, about 80%, live in rural areas. The urban part of the town is within a 6-kilometer radius. This means many people live spread out across the land.
The population is quite young. There are many births, so families often have more than three members. Most public and private services are in the urban areas. It can still be hard for people in rural areas to get to these services.
Cultural Connections
It can be difficult to communicate in some parts of El Soberbio. Also, the nearby country of Brazil has a strong media presence. This includes radio and TV. Because of this, the culture in El Soberbio is very unique. For example, children in elementary schools might speak portuñol. This is a mix of Spanish and Portuguese. Trade, both legal and illegal, also happens across the border. This makes the borders feel more like a formality than a strict line.
Exploring El Soberbio's Structure
Town Organization and History
El Soberbio was the third town in the Misiones Province to create its own charter. A charter is like a town's rulebook. This happened even before the capital city of the province had its own charter.
The Capital of Essences
Some important areas in El Soberbio are planted with special grasses. These grasses are used to extract essences. Essences are like strong, natural scents or flavors. Because of this, El Soberbio became known as the National Capital of Essences.
Getting Around El Soberbio
You can reach El Soberbio by using Provincial Route 13. This route is about 50 kilometers long. It connects the town north to San Vicente. You can also use Provincial Route No. 2. This route links El Soberbio southwest to Colonia Aurora and San Javier. It also goes north to the amazing Moconá Falls.
The road to Moconá Falls is expected to be paved soon. This will make it easier for tourists to visit. It should also help El Soberbio become a more popular place for visitors.
El Soberbio's Economy
Main Jobs and Agriculture
In the past, most jobs in El Soberbio came from farming. The government often encouraged growing one main crop. These crops included yerba mate, tea, tung, and aromatic essences. While these crops could grow together, they were often replaced over time. This happened based on which crop brought the most money.
One activity that continued was logging native forests. Even today, cutting down trees from the natural forests is a big part of the economy.
Recent Economic Growth
Over the last 10 years, the economy in El Soberbio has grown a lot. This growth is especially true for small farmers. Like in other parts of the province, these farmers grow different crops. Other landowners focus on planting new trees to replace those cut down.
Cutting down hardwood trees is very common. After the trees are cut, the land is often used to plant pine trees or tobacco. Tobacco farming has especially boosted the economy. This has given people in rural areas more money to spend. It has also influenced provincial policies. These policies are now trying to shift the economy. The goal is to focus on activities that cause less pollution. They also want to promote tourism with a low impact on nature. Building the route to Moconá Falls is part of this plan. It should bring double benefits to the local people.
