The Elam Ives House: A Historic Home
The Elam Ives House is found in the eastern part of Hamden. It sits on the south side of Ives Street, near the Mill River.
What Does It Look Like?
The house is a wooden building with one and a half floors. It has a sloped roof and a chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with wooden shingles. The front of the house is three sections wide. It has windows that slide up and down on both sides of the main door. The front door has a simple frame. Above the door, there is a small window with four glass panes. People say that the inside of the house still looks much like it did when it was built around 1790.
Who Lived Here? The Ives Family
The Elam Ives House was built in 1790 by Elam Ives Sr. He was a farmer who also had other businesses. His sons became very active in building up industries in the area. They used water power from the Farmington Canal, which had stopped working as a canal, to run their businesses.
The area became known as Ivesville because of all the business activities of James Ives, one of Elam's sons. Other sons were also involved in making horse-drawn carriages. This industry became very important in Hamden and New Haven.
The House Today
In 1912, the local water company bought the house. They bought it because it was in an important area for collecting water. The water company has owned the property ever since. Sometimes, they rent the house out to people.
