Eleanor Joan Ellis was born in Putney, a part of London, England. She went to school in Malvern Wells. Later, from 1923 to 1925, she studied art. She attended the Brook Green art school. This school was started and run by an artist named Leon Underwood.

Her Art and Style

Throughout her life, Eleanor created many different types of art. She made intricate wood engravings. She also painted using both oil paints and watercolours. Wood engraving is a special way of making prints. Artists carve a design into a block of wood. Then, they use ink to print the design onto paper.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Eleanor Ellis showed her artwork in many places. She regularly exhibited with the English Wood Engraving Society. She also showed her art with the New English Art Club. Another group she exhibited with was the Royal Society of British Artists. In 1927, her work was shown at the Royal Hibernian Academy.

She also had her own special art shows. These were called solo exhibitions. They took place at the Redfern Gallery and the Gieves Art Gallery.
