Eleanor had three brothers. They were Charles Rolls, John Maclean Rolls, and Henry Allan Rolls. Sadly, all her brothers passed away before her. Because of this, she inherited her family's large estate called The Hendre, near Monmouth.
A Life of Adventure and Engineering
In 1898, Eleanor married John Courtown Edward Shelley. In 1917, they both legally changed their last name to Shelley-Rolls. This happened after Eleanor inherited her family's estate.
Before World War One, Eleanor and her husband loved to fly in hot air balloons. They often flew with May Assheton Harbord. She was the first woman in the UK to get an Aeronaut's Certificate. Eleanor and John even flew in one of the earliest Zeppelins and an early type of airplane.
Founding the Women's Engineering Society
On June 23, 1919, Eleanor became one of the seven people who signed the papers to create the Women's Engineering Society. This society was very important for women in engineering.
Other founders included Rachel Mary Parsons, Lady Katharine Parsons, Janetta Mary Ornsby, Margaret Rowbotham, Margaret, Lady Moir, and Laura Annie Willson.
Eleanor was very active in the society. She attended their first official meeting in 1920. She also stayed on their Advisory Council. She even represented the society on the board of the Electrical Association for Women.
Promoting Electrification
Eleanor Shelley-Rolls worked with Margaret Partridge to encourage the use of electricity in Britain. They believed that more homes and businesses should have electric power.
