Elena Luzzatto (born October 30, 1900 – died 1983) was an amazing Italian architect. She made history as the very first woman to graduate from an architecture program in Italy! She was also known as Elena Luzzatto Valentini.

Elena was born in Ancona, Italy. Her mother, Annarella "Cloe" Luzzatto Gabrielli, was also an architect, graduating just two years after Elena did. Elena studied architecture at the Regia Scuola Superiore di Architettura in Rome, finishing her studies in 1925.

Elena Luzzatto's Career

After graduating, Elena worked as an assistant to Professor Vincenzo Fasolo at the Faculty of Engineering in Rome from 1928 to 1934. She then started her career at the Technical Office for the Municipality of Rome. There, she helped design public buildings and worked on restoring old monuments.

During a period in Italy called the Fascist era, Elena designed many villas. She worked on these projects by herself, with other architects, or with her husband, Felice Romoli, who was an engineer.

Key Architectural Projects

Elena Luzzatto designed many important buildings throughout her career:

  • In 1935, she designed the covered market in Piazza Principe di Napoli (which is now called Piazza Alessandria) in Rome.
  • In 1945, she won a competition to design the Prima Porta Cemetery in Rome. This is a very large and important cemetery.
  • In 1950, she designed the Primavalle I Market, also in Rome.
  • From 1958 to 1964, Elena was the main architect for several public housing projects in southern Italy. These projects helped provide homes for many people.

Elena Luzzatto passed away in Rome in 1983. Her work as an architect, especially being the first woman to graduate in architecture in Italy, made a big impact and opened doors for other women in the field.
