Elena Marchisotto facts for kids
Elena Anne Corie Marchisotto, born in 1945, is a special kind of mathematician. She not only works with numbers but also teaches math and studies the history of mathematics. She used to be a professor of mathematics at California State University, Northridge.
Becoming a Mathematician and Teacher
Elena Marchisotto finished college at Manhattanville College in 1967. Later, she earned her master's degree from California State University, Northridge in 1977. She then went on to get her Ph.D. in 1990 from New York University. Her Ph.D. project was all about the math contributions of someone named Mario Pieri.
She started teaching at California State University, Northridge in 1983. While there, she created a special math program. This program helped train graduate students to become great math teachers. In 1993, this program won an award for being an outstanding mathematics program!
Writing About Math
Elena Marchisotto has written many books and articles about mathematics.
In 1995, she became a co-author of a special edition of a famous book called The Mathematical Experience. She had used this book for her own teaching since the early 1980s. A newer version of the book came out in 2012.
She also helped translate a history book about modern mathematics into English. This book is called Hilbert's Flute: The History of Modern Mathematics.
Marchisotto has written a lot about a mathematician named Mario Pieri. She explored his ideas on how math is built and how it should be taught. Some of her works about him include:
- "The Legacy of Mario Pieri on the Foundations and Philosophy of Mathematics" (2021)
- "Mario Pieri: the man, the mathematician, the teacher" (2010)
- "The Legacy of Mario Pieri in geometry and arithmetic" (2007)
Elena Marchisotto believes that teaching math should be "humanistic." This means focusing on the human side of mathematics, like how people discover ideas and how math connects to our lives. She has written about this idea in articles like:
- "The Human Face of Mathematics: Reuben Hersh (1927-2020) In Memoriam" (2020)
- "Teaching mathematics humanistically: A new look at an old friend" (1993)
Math Textbooks
Elena Marchisotto also helped write several textbooks for students:
- 1987: Topics in Intermediate Algebra
- 1987: Developmental Mathematics: Arithmetic, Algebra, and Measurement Geometry
- 2003: Mathematics for High School Teachers: An Advanced Perspective
