Elena Pop-Hossu-Longin (born November 26, 1862 – died May 15, 1940) was an important Romanian writer and journalist. She was born when Romania was part of Austria-Hungary. Elena was a strong supporter of equal rights for women. She worked hard to make sure women had the same chances as men.

Early Life and Family

Elena Pop was born on November 26, 1862. Her birthplace was a town called Szilágyillésfalva, which is known today as Băsești. This area was part of Austria-Hungary at the time. Her mother was Maria Loșonți. Her father was Gheorghe Pop de Băsești, who was a politician.

In 1882, Elena married Francisc Hossu-Longin. He was a lawyer.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Elena Pop-Hossu-Longin was a very important leader in the women's movement in Romania. This movement worked to get equal rights for women. She especially focused on making sure girls and women could get a good education, just like boys and men.

She helped start two important groups for women. In 1880, she co-founded the Reuniunea Femeilor Române Sălăjene. This means the Union of Romanian Women of Sălaj. Later, in 1886, she also helped start the Reuniunea Femeilor Române Hunedorene. This was the Union of Romanian Women of Hunedoara. She became the president of this second group in 1895 and led it until 1918.

Awards and Recognition

Elena Pop-Hossu-Longin received an award in 1879. It was called the Decoration of the Cross of Queen Elisabeth. She earned this award because she helped raise money for soldiers. These soldiers were hurt during the Romanian War of Independence.
