Her Ph.D. research focused on ways to solve math problems related to how things change over time. Her supervisor was Alfredo Bermúdez de Castro.

María Elena Vázquez Cendón has been a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Santiago de Compostela since 1989. This means she has been teaching and doing research there for many years. In 2013, she also started working as a research associate for the Technical Institute for Industrial Mathematics.
