Elena Yanovskaya was born in Leningrad, Russia, on May 20, 1938.
Her Education and Early Career
Elena studied math at Leningrad State University. She focused on probability and statistics, which helps understand chances and data. After finishing university in 1959, she started working as a researcher at a math institute in Leningrad. She worked there for six years.
In 1964, she earned her first advanced degree in mathematics. This degree is called a Candidate of Sciences in Russia.
Leading Research in Game Theory
From 1965 to 1975, Elena worked at an institute that combined economics and math. She started as a researcher and later became the head of a special lab. This lab studied game theory.
Then, from 1975 to 1990, she worked at another institute focusing on social and economic issues. In 1980, she earned her second, even higher, degree in her field. This degree is known as a Doctor of Sciences.
From 1990 to 2015, Elena led a laboratory. This lab focused on Game Theory and Decision Making. This means they studied how people make choices, especially when working with others. Since 2009, she has also been a professor at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg.
Awards and Recognition
Elena Yanovskaya received the Kantorovich Prize in 2014. She earned this award for her work on how groups can share things fairly. It also recognized her ideas on how to combine different choices into one good decision.
