Elga Lee Jefferies, born on July 10, 1946, is an American politician. She was a member of the Democratic Party. She served in the Illinois House of Representatives for the 26th District. She also briefly served in the Illinois Senate.

Elga Jefferies' Political Journey
Elga Jefferies has had an interesting career in Illinois politics. She stepped in to fill important roles when other politicians left office. She also ran for election to represent her community.
Serving in the Illinois Senate
In December 2002, Elga Jefferies was chosen to join the Illinois Senate. She took over from Margaret Smith, who had resigned. Jefferies served in this role for a short time. She held the position until January 2003. Then, Mattie Hunter, who had won the election, officially took office.
Representing the Illinois House
On June 3, 2006, Jefferies was appointed to the Illinois House of Representatives. She took the place of Lovana Jones, who had passed away. Jefferies then ran for election in November 2006 and won. She represented the 26th District.
During her time in the House, Jefferies focused on several key areas. She worked on improving physical and mental healthcare for people. She also supported making housing more affordable. Another important goal was helping adults who did not finish high school get an education.
In the 2008 primary election, Jefferies ran again. However, she was not re-elected. She finished third among five candidates.
Voting on Important Issues
On January 9, 2009, Elga Jefferies took part in a vote regarding Governor Rod Blagojevich. She voted "present" on the issue of his impeachment. This means she chose not to vote either yes or no.
Community Involvement and Leadership
Elga Jefferies has been active in her community since she was young. She worked with many different groups. These groups included the Palmer House for Boys and the Near North Organization.
She was also involved with Operation P.U.S.H. and the Task Force for Black Empowerment. Jefferies was part of the National Democratic Organization. She also served as Deputy Mayor of Bronzeville, working with the Bronzeville Merchants Association. She is a member of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus.
