Elisabeth Berge (born November 27, 1954 – died April 12, 2020) was an important Norwegian businessperson and a civil servant. A civil servant is someone who works for the government. She held many important roles in government and in large companies throughout her career.
Early Life and Education
Elisabeth Berge was born in Norway in 1954. She loved learning and went to two great universities. In 1978, she earned a degree in economics from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration. The next year, in 1979, she got her Master of Arts degree in Economics from the University of California in the United States.
Career in Government and Business
Elisabeth Berge started her career working for the Norwegian government. From 1981 to 1990, she worked in the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. This is the government department that handles Norway's oil and gas resources. By 1986, she became a deputy under-secretary of State, which is a senior leadership role.
After her time in government, Elisabeth moved to the business world. From 1990 to 2004, she worked at Statoil. Statoil was a very large Norwegian energy company, now known as Equinor. She became the chief of communications for the company in 2001. This meant she was in charge of how the company talked to the public.
In 2004, she returned to the government. She was appointed as the permanent under-secretary of State in the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. This was a very important and lasting leadership position.
Other Important Roles
Elisabeth Berge also served on the boards of other organizations. From 1992 to 2000, she was a board member of Statnett. Statnett is the company that manages Norway's main power grid. This grid makes sure electricity gets to homes and businesses.
She was also on the board of the Kavli Foundation from 1999 to 2004. The Kavli Foundation is a charitable organization. It supports science, research, and other good causes.
Elisabeth Berge passed away in 2020. She is remembered for her significant contributions to both government and business in Norway.
