There, she studied linguistics, which is the scientific study of language. She focused on German and Dutch languages. In 1970, she earned her PhD, a very high university degree, from the University of Münster.

Her Work in Finland and Germany

After finishing her studies, Elisabeth Piirainen worked as an editor for the German Language department at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland. In 1963, she met Ilpo Tapani Piirainen, a Finnish scholar who also studied the German language. They got married in 1967.

Since 1975, Elisabeth Piirainen led many projects about Low German philology. Philology is the study of language in written historical sources. Low German is a group of dialects spoken in northern Germany.

Elisabeth Piirainen was very active in a field called phraseology. This is the study of fixed expressions, like idioms and proverbs. For example, "It's raining cats and dogs" is an idiom, and "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is a proverb. She looked at how these phrases are used across different European languages.

Her work was very important for understanding how language works. A famous scholar named Wolfgang Mieder listed fifty of her publications about proverbs. This shows how much she contributed to the study of proverbs, also known as paremiology. From 2006 to 2010, she was part of the Scientific Council of the European Society of Phraseology (Europhras).
