Her Life and Writings
Early Life and Marriage
Elizabeth Dorothea Cobbe was born around 1764. Her parents were Colonel Thomas Cobbe and Lady Eliza Beresford. In November 1784, she married Sir Henry Tuite. He was a naval officer and the 8th Baronet. Sadly, Sir Henry passed away in 1805.
Her Poetic Style
Lady Tuite wrote poems in the romantic style. Her first book had five poems written "as a sylph." A sylph is a mythical air spirit. This idea came from earlier writers like Pope. Some of her other works talked about the importance of war. They also spoke about the honor of dying for one's country.
Her poems and songs often had a patriotic theme. Some longer poems described problems in society. They also suggested ways to make things better.
Lady Tuite passed away in 1850. This was 45 years after her husband died. She was buried in the vault of her friend, Mrs. Lysaght. She was not buried next to her husband. It is believed she was living in Bath at that time.
Lady Tuite was the granddaughter of Charles Cobbe. He was the Archbishop of Dublin. She was also related to Elizabeth Rawdon, Countess of Moira. Lady Tuite was the great-aunt of Frances Power Cobbe. Frances was a famous reformer in the Victorian era.
Lady Moira was known for hosting special gatherings. At these events, people discussed and celebrated Irish culture. Lady Tuite mentioned this on the dedication page of her book Poems.
Frances Power Cobbe visited her great-aunt in 1834. Lady Tuite was in her seventies then. She was still driving around Bath with a four-horse team. Lady Tuite's books were published when Frances was a teenager. It is thought that Lady Tuite influenced the younger woman.
