About Elizabeth Pope

Elizabeth Carney was born in 1910 in Hamilton, Montana. She loved art and studied at two important schools. First, she went to the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. Then, she studied at the School of Fine Arts in Fontainbleau, France. Around 1940, she married a photographer named W. Kenneth Pope.

Her Famous Mural

In 1941, Elizabeth Pope painted a large picture called Discovery of Ore. This painting is a mural, which means it's painted directly on a wall. You can find it in the Post Office in Chisholm, Minnesota. The money for this mural came from a government program. This program was called the Treasury Section of Fine Arts (TSFA). It helped artists create public art during a tough economic time in America.

Showing Her Art

Elizabeth Pope was not only a muralist. She also made prints and other paintings. Her artwork was shown in many places. These included the Minnesota State Fair and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. She also showed her work at the Art Institute of Chicago. For several years, she exhibited with a group of artists called Northern California Arts.

Teaching Art

Besides creating her own art, Elizabeth Pope also taught others. She shared her skills at Hamilton University in St. Paul. She also taught at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. She passed away in 1991.
