Elizabeth Emmet Lenox-Conyngham (1800 – around 1889) was an Irish poet. She was also known as Mrs. George Lenox Conyngham. She wrote many poems and translated works from other languages.
Early Life and Family
Elizabeth Emmet Lenox-Conyngham was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1800. Her birth name was Elizabeth Emmet Holmes. She was the only child of Robert Holmes and Mary Anne Holmes. Her uncle was Robert Emmet, a famous Irish nationalist.
In 1827, she married George Lenox Conyngham. He worked as a chief clerk in the Foreign Office in London. They had two children: a son named George, also known as Gino, and a daughter named Mary Ann Grace Louisa, called May.
Her Published Works
Elizabeth Lenox-Conyngham published her first book in 1833. It was called The Dream, and Other Poems. This book included some poems written by her mother. It also had translations of poems by the German poet Friedrich von Matthisson.
The editor of the Dublin University Magazine, Charles Stuart Stanford, praised her translations. He believed she was one of the first women in Ireland to study German literature.
Over the years, she published three more books of poetry. These were Hella and other poems (1836), Horae poeticae: lyrical and other poems (1859), and Eiler and Helvig: a Danish legend in verse (1863). She also wrote a list of Italian authors who wrote about military science. This was published in a special paper for engineers.
Later Life
In 1852, her father lived with her in London after he retired. Elizabeth Lenox-Conyngham likely passed away around 1889. Her daughter, May, married Hayes St Leger, 4th Viscount Doneraile. Letters and documents about Elizabeth's family can be found among his papers.
