Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop was born in Washington, D.C. Her father, Stewart Alsop, was a newspaper writer. Her mother, Patricia Alsop, worked in medical research.

Elizabeth Winthrop went to Sarah Lawrence College. She later married Robert Jason Bosseau in 2005. He is a director of drama programs in New York.
