Elizabeth Youatt (born in 1816, died in 1879) was a British writer. She was also known as Mrs. W.H. Coates after she got married. Elizabeth wrote many stories and novels during her lifetime. She lived in London, England, and became known for her interesting books.

Life of Elizabeth Youatt

Elizabeth Youatt was one of four daughters. Her father, William Youatt, was a well-known animal doctor, also called a vet. Growing up, Elizabeth was surrounded by a family that valued learning.

Her Writing Career

Elizabeth Youatt wrote many short novels. She often wrote for an organization called the Religious Tract Society. This group published books with moral and religious messages. She also wrote two longer and very important novels. These were published in the 1840s. They were called "three-volume novels" because they were so long they came in three separate books!

Marriage and Later Life

In 1851, Elizabeth married William Henry Coates. He was younger than her. William worked as a secretary for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. This college was a big part of the animal care world, just like her father's profession.

A sad event happened in 1851. Her friend, Ellen Pickering, was also a successful writer. But Ellen died too young. Elizabeth stepped in to finish Ellen's novel, which was called The Grandfather. This shows how helpful and dedicated Elizabeth was to her friends and to writing. Elizabeth Youatt passed away in 1879.
