What is a Rancheria?

A rancheria is a small piece of land set aside for Native American communities in California. It's similar to a reservation but often smaller. These lands help Native American tribes keep their culture and traditions alive.

Learning and Education

Children living at the Elk Valley Rancheria go to schools run by the Del Norte County Unified School District. This school district helps provide education for students in the area.

A Brief History of Elk Valley Rancheria

The Elk Valley Rancheria was first created in the early 1900s. Its main goal was to provide a home for Native American people who had lost their original lands. The United States government held this land "in trust" for the tribe. This means the government managed the land for the tribe's benefit.

Changes to Trust Lands

In 1958, a law called the California Rancheria Termination Acts changed things. This law ended the trust status for many rancherias, including Elk Valley. This meant the government no longer held the land in trust.

Regaining Recognition

Later, in 1983, an important court case happened. It was called Hardwick v. United States. This case led to a special agreement called the "1983 Stipulation." This agreement allowed the Elk Valley Rancheria to get their lands back into trust with the United States. It also meant they were once again officially recognized as a tribe by the federal government. This was a big step for the community.
