A Long History in Harlem
The church started as a place for people to gather and learn. It was first called the Harlem Reformed Low Dutch Church. Over many years, different church buildings were built in the area. The current building was designed by Joseph Ireland. It was built between 1893 and 1894. At first, it was a parish house and Sunday school. This means it was a place for church activities and teaching.
Around 1910, the main church building was taken down. The parish house was then rebuilt and became the Elmendorf Chapel. Later, it was renamed the Elmendorf Reformed Church. It is part of the Reformed Church in America (RCA).
Discovering History
In 2008, something interesting was found near the church. Workers were digging at the 126th Street Depot for the MTA Regional Bus Operations. They discovered an old burying ground. This was where African American members of the church were buried a long time ago. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority agreed to move the bus depot by 2015 because of this important discovery.
Church Building Details
The church building has two stories plus a basement. It is shaped like the letter "L". It takes up most of its lot, which is about 53 feet wide and 120 feet deep. The building has a beautiful design.
National Recognition
Because of its history and importance, the Elmendorf Reformed Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.
A Special Leader
On September 22, 2002, something new happened for the church. Patricia A. Singletary became the first female minister of the Elmendorf Reformed Church. This was an important moment for the church community.
