Elsie Frederica Barlow (1876 – 1948) was an amazing Australian artist. She was known for her paintings and prints. Elsie was one of the first members of a group called the Twenty Melbourne Painters. She was also the very first woman to have her own art show in Castlemaine, Victoria.

Her Early Life and Art Training

Elsie Frederica Hake was born in 1876 in Melbourne, Australia. She was the youngest of seven children, with six older sisters.

In 1894, Elsie started studying art at the Gallery School of Design. Her teachers included famous artists like Frederick McCubbin and Lindsay Bernard Hall. She went to the National Gallery School with her sister, Dora Serle. Both Elsie and Dora loved art from a young age. They even took art classes together at St Kilda Town Hall when they were children.

Elsie's art was shown in a big Australian art exhibition in London in 1898. Her painting Welcome News almost won a special scholarship in 1897. It came in second place to a painting by Max Meldrum.

Family Life and Moving Around

In 1901, Elsie married Arthur Barlow, who was a police magistrate. They had three children: a son named Basil (born in 1904) and two daughters, Nancy (born in 1906) and Betty (born in 1907). Sadly, Betty passed away a few months after she was born.

The family lived in Maryborough in 1909. Then, in 1912, they moved to Castlemaine.

Art Shows and Studios

In 1912, Elsie had her very own art show at the Mechanics' Institute in Castlemaine. She showed 90 of her paintings! This important show helped lead to the creation of the Castlemaine Art Gallery.

From 1899 to 1901, Elsie shared an art studio in Collins Street with her sister Dora. Elsie moved back to Melbourne in 1916, and her husband Arthur passed away shortly after. In 1919, she opened a new studio in the Dunklings Building in Melbourne. That June, she held another exhibition, showing 76 paintings and 6 pen drawings.

Elsie Barlow is known as one of the first women to paint snow scenes in Australia. She would sometimes leave her paper outside in the snow to get the right effect. She did this when visiting her friend May Vale in Sassafras.

Elsie was also one of the artists who helped start the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society.

Elsie Barlow passed away in a hospital in Mentone, Victoria, on 15 November 1948.

Her Lasting Impact

After Elsie passed away, special art shows were held in 1977 and 1978. These shows celebrated her work and honored her as one of the people who helped start the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historic Museum.

A place in Canberra, Australia, called Hacke Place, is named after Elsie and her older sister Dora. The name was officially given in 1988, even though their family name was spelled "Hake."
