In 1961, Elsie began to study painting. She took private lessons in London. Her teacher was a Polish artist named Marian Bohusz-Szyszko. Elsie and Marian worked together for about 15 years. This helped Elsie develop her artistic skills.

Elsie E. Stevens had many art shows. She had solo exhibitions, meaning her art was shown by itself. These shows took place at several art galleries. Some of these were the Alwin Gallery and the Woodstock Gallery. She also showed her art at the Loggia and Barrett Galleries.

Her paintings were also displayed in other cities. She had exhibitions in Amsterdam and Dublin. Her art was also shown in Durham and Eastbourne. In 1973, she had a show at the Gardner Arts Centre. This centre is part of the University of Sussex in Brighton.
