Who Were Blanche and Joseph Ely?

Blanche and Joseph Ely were dedicated educators. They played a huge role in the African-American community in Pompano Beach. Blanche Ely was the principal of Blanche Ely High School for many years. This school was even named after her because of her hard work and leadership. It was first known as Pompano Colored School, then Blanche Ely Negro High, before becoming Blanche Ely High School.

The Museum's Story

The city of Pompano Beach bought the Ely House in 1997. The museum first opened its doors in 2000. However, it closed for a while in 2007. Thanks to renovation funds from the city and the Florida Department of State, the museum proudly reopened in 2019.
