Granberg grew up in Vihanti. He started his painting career quite young. His very first known artwork was for the Muhos church. He worked on this project between 1773 and 1774.

Emanuel Granberg mostly painted for churches. He created large wall paintings, called murals. He also made many other kinds of paintings for these buildings. His art can be found in churches in places like Oulunsalo, Raahe, and Sotkamo.
