The Embassy of Belarus in London is the official office that represents the country of Belarus in the United Kingdom. It is like Belarus's home away from home in London. This embassy helps people from Belarus in the UK and works to keep good relations between the two countries.

You can find the embassy in South Kensington, a part of London. It is located just south of Hyde Park. It sits between the Embassy of Azerbaijan and the Embassy of Mongolia.

What is an Embassy?

An embassy is a special building where a country's representatives work in another country. Think of it as a bridge between two nations. The main person in charge of an embassy is called an ambassador.

Embassies have several important jobs:

  • They help citizens from their home country who are visiting or living abroad. This might include helping with passports or emergencies.
  • They work to build strong relationships between their home country and the country they are in.
  • They share information about their home country's culture, economy, and policies.
  • They also help with travel, like issuing visas to people who want to visit their home country.

History of the Embassy

The country of Belarus became independent in 1991. Soon after, in 1992, Britain and Belarus started official diplomatic relations. This means they agreed to work together and have formal communication.

At first, in 1993, Belarus set up a smaller office in London called a consular-general. This office mainly helped with things like visas and passports. Because of the growing relationship, this office was made into a full embassy in 1994. This showed that Belarus and the UK wanted to have stronger ties.

A Change of Location

When the consular-general and later the embassy first started, the Belarusian community in the UK helped them. They provided a building at 1 St Stephen's Crescent for the new office.

However, after some political changes in Belarus in the mid-1990s, the embassy moved. The new government in Belarus made some big changes, including new national symbols and making Russian an official language. Because of these changes, the embassy was asked to move from its original building. It then found its current home at 6 Kensington Court.

People Expressing Their Views

In 2010, some people gathered near the embassy to express their opinions. These protests were held by individuals who disagreed with some of the government's actions in Belarus. They also protested against internet censorship in Belarus. This means they were concerned about rules that limit what people can see or say online. Protests are a way for people to show their feelings and try to bring about change.
